Five Months Too Soon

March 6, 2012

The POP of the final strike hitting the catcher’s mitt is what did it for me.  Sitting on the corner of my bed, inches from the television, I smiled an enormous smile while trying to keep my soul from aching.  The utter elation of the Cardinals’ World Series win swirled inside me and swished together with feelings of overwhelming sadness.  Like a hurricane brewing over the Caribbean, I knew what was in store.

Then, it arrived.  The tears fell as I simultaneously laughed and cried.  I had just witnessed one of the greatest season comebacks in the history of baseball.  But my grandfather, the life-long, die-hard Cardinals’ fan passed away five months too soon to experience this himself.
