Not so bad, eh?

May 18, 2011

Last week, when I posted about The Unicorn Prompt and my disdain for prompt-writers everywhere, I was simply venting months of pent-up frustration over standardized testing and its control over my instruction.  I can look back now with a bit less heartache.  The scores have arrived.

While they’re certainly not the Earth-shattering, through-the-roof kind of scores we worked so hard to achieve, I am satisfied with the results.  Nearly three-quarters of our students received the desired score or higher!  Does that compare with other, higher-achieving schools in our district?  Not even close!  However, this is a marked improvement over last year’s results for us.  Our students overcame a lot of obstacles to reach their goal score (including being baffled by the prompt).

In the end, I’m proud of the kids.  And still moderately infuriated by the prompt.

I’m proud of you! With a prompt out of left field (or, as with our beloved stadiums, this prompt could be from the end zone), your kids were still able to succeed, and that’s amazing.
