Still Alive!

April 18, 2011

People always talk about “teacher burnout” and it’s just not a concept I’ve ever understood.  Do I get tired sometimes?  Of course!  Everyone does.  Usually, I just take the weekend, sleep it off and return to school on Monday revving to teach!

Unfortunately, all of our standardized testing and the pressure associated with it have shown me the other side of the coin.  In recent weeks, I have changed almost all of my normal activities.  From forgoing my usual workout schedule to losing hours of sleep, this stress has affected me in ways I’ve never experienced before.  I have taken a break from the blogging not because I’m uninterested in sharing with everyone, but because I haven’t exactly been in a “celebrating learning” kind of mindset.

Over the past few weeks, I’ve struggled with questions like:

What does it mean to sellout?

If I’m teaching to the test, does that make me a bad teacher?

Is focusing on “bubble kids” really an effective strategy? What about the rest of them?

I know I’m not the only one struggling with these issues….but I can’t tell if that makes me feel better or worse.

I can tell you one thing for sure, though:  I’m glad THAT’S over!  Now, on to all of those celebratory things I love so much!!
